Summary:
Atresias of the cecum, the ileocecal junction and the vermiform appendix are rare variants of congenital malformations of the intestines.
Embryology and surgical anatomy of the cecum, the ileocecal junction and the vermiform appendix are introduced in the general part of this thesis. Then, congenital anomalies of these parts, other than atresias, which are the main topic of the special part of this thesis, are being presented.
In the first chapter of the special part, atresias of jejunum, ileus and colon are discussed. The latest epidemiological data as well as the main etiological hypothesis and the current classification system are presented. Then, clinical manifestation, differential diagnosis, management, operative considerations, postoperative care and, finally, prognosis are mentioned. In the second chapter of the special part of this thesis, international literature concerning atresias of the cecum, the ileocecal junction and the vermiform appendix is reviewed.
