Dermoscopy of metatypical basal cell carcinoma
Summary:
Metatypical basal cell carcinoma (basosquamous carcinoma) is a high risk basal carcinoma with higher rates of recurrences and metastasis compared to classic basal cell carinoma. It is mainly located at the head and neck region and can mimic clinically other benign and malignant lesions. Its early diagnosis is crucial regarding patient's prognosis. The histopathology is necessary for the final diagnosis characterized by features of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma seperated by a tranzitional zone. Till today the diagnosis is postoperative with very low rates of clinical suspicion at the base line visit. Dermoscopy is an in vivo method of diagnosis with high sensitivity and specifity rates in the diagnosis of melanoma and non melanoma skin cancers. The coexistence of squamous and basal carcinoma dermoscopical findings in a lesion especially if it is located in the head and neck area should raise the clinical suspicion for the diagnosis of basosquamous carcinoma.
