Epidemiology of benign acute childhood myositis in a tertiary pediatric children hospital during a 10-period (2007-2017)
Summary:
Benign Acute Childhood Myositis (BACM), is an acute condition which manifests with severe lower-extremity myalgia and reluctance to walk. The aim of the study was to evaluate the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of BACM in a tertiary children’s hospita and to evaluate the incidence rate of BACM and also the association of the epidemiology of BACM with the type of influenza in the community. A retrospective analysis of children’s records who were hospitalized at the largest Greek tertiary Children’s Hospital with the diagnosis of BACM during the years 2007-2017 was performed. During the study period, 783 children were hospitalized due to BACM with the highest incidence rate of BACM during the seaspn 2016-2017, while the association of the incidence of BACM with each type of influenza was found non-statistically significant (P-value > 0.05).The median age of patients was 7,5 years with a 2:1 male predominance. Creatine kinase was elevated in all patients and influenza B waw detected in 60%. One case of BACM due to Influenza B was complicated with nephrotic syndrome and two others hospitalized for myositis were finally diagnosed with carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT II) deficiency. In conclusion, in our study population an association with specific influenza virus subtype was not detected. The syndrome usually has a benign course. However, in cases of recurrent episodes of BACM the possibility of an underlying metabolic cause should be considered.
