the daily routines of the cadets (Evelpides) at the Hellenic Army Academy in the 1970s and 1980s
Summary:
This study investigates the daily routines of the cadets (Evelpides) at the Hellenic Army Academy in the 1970s and 1980s, based on participatory observation and biographical narrations of retired Hellenic Army Academy graduate officers. The interviews, analysis and interpretation is done through a combination of methods and practices. The aim of this study is to highlight the subjective ways of living.
The daily routines, the interactions and the relations between the four year cadets of the Academy are reflected through the narrations. The importance and the role of tradition in the formation of the Greek Officer is revealed. The expression that came out effortlessly from the narrators' lips "Once a cadet, always a cadet", depicts the deep roots and strong links of the Academy, which remain stable in time.
The way in which everyday life in the Academy is influenced by socio-political situations is reflected, and the role of each year of cadets and the interaction between them is discussed.
