Pharmacological approach of patients with Bipolar Disorder during lactation and the postpartum period
Summary:
Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a serious emotional disorder characterized by a wide range of lifelong mood changes that vary between depressive, hypomanic, manic or mixed episodes.
Despite the fact that there is an extensive discussion concerning the effect of pregnancy on the natural course of the disease, patients with BD face a high risk of developing symptoms during the postpartum period. In addition, BD is associated with a higher risk of psychiatric hospitalization in the postpartum period. The treatment of bipolar disorder during pregnancy presents many clinical challenges. Many of the major mood stabilizers are associated with an increased risk of malformations in the fetus. However, discontinuation of treatment during pregnancy may increase the risk of a relapse.
