Four eras of 'logos' and artistic expression
Summary:
This paper is an attempt to organise the most prominent ontological and aesthetic concepts employed by Gilles Deleuze and his longtime collaborator Felix Guattari in relation to expression and art, namely the Refrain, Percept and Affect, Faciality and Time Crystals. A brief reference to Regimes of Signs and Strata is made. As with most of the work by the two thinkers, there is an element of futility in the ambition to separate whichever concept from the overall philosophical process they undertake; as such, I have tried to maintain the grounds whereupon each of the following concepts stem, and form rhizomes. The second half of this thesis takes up the enterprise to apply the Deleuzian-Guattarian vocabulary to prehistoric and ancient art, to re-imagine it in a crystalline, or liminal context. The purpose of this effort is a theoretical experiment in history and philosophy, more particularly into whether it is possible to delve into artworks that emerge in very particular durations, aeonic durations, in a way that is revelatory of the affects that pass through the humans. I argue that such artworks can be seen as crystals that are formed when consciousness of temporality splits into two heterogeneous directions. In the words of Gilles Deleuze, “it is time that we seen inside the crystal, a bit of time in its pure form, Kronos, not Chronos.”
