Investigation of a protocol for analyzing the composition of the human body by the bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) and comparing it with the method of skinfolds for the determination of body fat
Summary:
In this thesis, we studied several protocols were studied for the determination of body composition using the bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA). The BIA system used for all measurements was the Bodystat 1500 MDD. In order to assess the protocol, we examined whether the body's posture (sitting, lying down or closing his right arm in such a way that the arm and the forearm were touching), the condition of the skin (presence or absence of fluid) and hydration of the participant at the time of the measurements has a statistically significant impact on the experimental variation. The percentage of body fat (%BF) through the calf and triceps skinfolds was also calculated in order to ascertain whether these two methods give comparable results. Finally, a novel equation for calculating fat free mass (FFM) was determined for both adults and children.
Measurements were carried out from 16/10/2018 to 02/03/19 in three population groups. The first group consisted of University students, the second of athletes of the Chinese Traditional martial Arts Academy of Ioannina and the third of the teenagers swimming team of PAS Giannena at the Municipal Swimming Pool of Ioannina. The age range varied from 6 to 52 years.
Results showed that the change in body posture, the presence of water, saline or body cream on the skin of the individual, and the body's hydration, yielded statistically significant changes. Comparison with thickness of skinfolds for the determination of body fat yielded inconsistent results for the two methods as was evident from the corresponding Bland-Altman plots.
Finally, the percentage of body fat (%BF) for children as measured by the skinfold method was found to be 27.03±5.02 while with the BIA method, %BF=22.21±6.92. The two methods showed a difference of 5%. As far as adults are concerned, from the skinfold method the fat percentage was found to be 21.23±7.23 while with BIA, %BF=18.36±7.20. The percentage difference in the case of adults is 3%. In both cases the skinfold method overestimates the fat percentage (%BF) as compared to the BIA method.
