Digital Addiction: Personality Traits and Internet Addiction as Predictive Factors of Social Network Site Usage in Adults aged between 18 and 30 years
Summary:
The past years, a tremendous increase in the number of people using social network
sites for communication, entertainment and interaction with friends, has been observed.
This phenomenon has attracted the interest of researchers, with literature focusing on the
emergence of a new type of addiction related to social network sites usage and on the
connection between personality traits and internet usage in general. The primary purpose
of this study is to predict specific dimensions of Facebook use, employing as predictive
factors personality traits and internet addiction. One hundred Facebook users participated
in the study through the means of an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of
the International Personality Inventory Pool- 50 items, the Internet Addiction Test and a
scale purposely made to measure Facebook use. With regards to main results, stepwise
regressions showed that internet addiction can significantly predict attitudes towards
Facebook and active use of this social network. Regarding personality traits, mainly
neuroticism showed evidence of being able to predict the percentage of Facebook friends
users also know in person and the time spent on Facebook daily. Limitations of current
study and suggestions for future research are set out in the last chapter of the thesis.
