The effect of exercise on the quality of life of women with breast cancer during chemotherapy treatment
Summary:
It is well documented that both cancer and aggressive therapies of the disease are associated with detrimental effects on cardiorespiratory, immune, nervous and musculoskeletal system. Exercise can reduce or reverse some of those adverse effects. The purpose of the present study was to assess the Quality of Life and the physical activity levels of women under breast cancer treatment and compared them with levels of age-matched healthy females.
Data collection was conducted using specific questionnaires such as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the short version (IPAQ-Short), the SF-36 Health Survey (SF-36 Health Survey) and the questionnaire of the European Agency for Research and Development on Quality of Life for Cancer EORTC QLQ-C30, version 3.0. The study involved 158 who were divided to the breast cancer or the control group.
The results revealed that women suffering from breast cancer choose moderate and not high-intensity physical activities while walking is their favorite form of exercise in this intensity. However, it seems that BMI (Body Mass Index) is not within the normal range, classifying them as overweight. Finally, women in the two groups estimate their quality of life in a similar way, with about 60% of each group evaluating it as very good.
