Summary:
In the context of this diploma thesis, the synthesis of polystyrene-b-poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) (PS-b-PGMA) diblock copolymers along with the synthesis of a PGMA-b-PS-b-PGMA triblock copolymer is described. For the diblock copolymers, a series of polystyrene-b-poly(solketal methacrylate) (PS-b-PSMA) copolymers were synthesized anionically by sequential addition of the monomers. Afterwards, these copolymers were treated with hydrochloric acid in order to remove the solketal groups resulting in the desired PS-b-PGMA chains. The triblock copolymer was synthesized in a similar manner except that the initiator used was a bifunctional initiator of the anionic polymerization. In all cases, during the step of the anionic polymerization, high-vacuum techniques and scientific glassblowing procedures were exploited.
Furthermore, a part of this thesis deals with the synthesis of a series of the random copolymers, poly(methacrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) by free radical polymerization.
The molecular and the structural characterization of the polymers were carried out by Νuclear Μagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR) and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC).
