Synthesis and characterization of complex polystyrene macromolecular architectures
Summary:
Anionic polymerization and high vacuum techniques were employed to prepare a series of well-defined polystyrene (PsMMS) bottlebrushes. The procedure involves: a) synthesis of styrenic macromonomers in benzene, by selective reaction of the corresponding macroanion with the chlorine of 4-(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS) and b) in situ anionic polymerization of the macromonomer without previous isolation.
By combining SEC, SLS and DLS characterization methods, the molecular weights and the distributions (PDI) of both the branches and the whole molecular brushes, the hydrodynamic (Rh), the gyroscopic radius (Rg) and the morphology of many bottlebrushes with different backbone polymerization degrees (26-110), were defined.
Through rheological measurements for several backbone polymerization degrees, the viscoelastic response of the bottlebrushes was studied, concluding to characteristics like the relaxation behavior, the entanglements and the dynamic ratios of the branches as well as the whole bottlebrushes.
