The formation of Simple Past in compound verbs with a prefix. Research on syllabic augment in students of the 5th and 6th grade.
Summary:
The present study is part of Morphology and aims to examine the formation of compound verbs with a prefix. We attempt to investigate the changes of these verbs in the different moods and particularly in the Simple Past Indicative, as well as in the Simple Imperative. In more detail, we examine the textbook material on the subject and how students in the 5th and 6th grade of Elementary School form compound verbs with a prefix, through the analysis of data from questionnaires, in order to identify the difficulties in this process. In the first chapter we introduce the Morphological Theory, the areas it deals with, and the levels of linguistic analysis to which they relate. In addition, we mention Morphological Awareness, the relation of Inflection and Derivation, and the basic morphological categories, words and forms. In the second chapter, we present the morphology of the verb. We discuss briefly the verbal and grammatical tense and present the syllabic augment from the ancient and archaic Greek language to the Standard Modern Greek, presenting different studies for the Greek Language. In the third chapter, we observe the grammar of this phenomenon as presented in the school textbooks and the way derivative verbs with a prefix are taught to the students in the last two grades of Elementary School. The fourth chapter presents the purpose of the present study and the questions it seeks to answer. Also, it describes the methodology used to answer those questions. The fifth chapter presents the results of the questionnaires for each of the classes separately and compares the results between them. The results of the research are presented in the form of diagrams (bar charts and pies) for better visualization. Moreover, the sixth chapter presents the conclusions drawn from the research performed, as well as the analysis of the results. Finally, in chapter seven we briefly mentioned the shortcomings of this thesis and discuss on how the sample can be expanded, in order to drill down on how different parameters influence the correct or incorrect formation of compound verbs with a prefix by students. We also make a proposal on how the textbook material can be improved, so that students are able to comprehend this subject more concisely.
