Divorce and gender relations in the venetian Corfu (late 18th c.)
Summary:
The present work focuses on gender relations and divorce in the Venetian-dominated Corfu in the late 18th century. On the first level, it focuses on gender roles and expected sexual behaviors focusing on the institution of marriage and, secondly, on the use of the judicial system as a means of resolving marriage disputes, with a particular emphasis on those involving adultery. The reason for the development of the work was a 1782 case file concerning the legal dispute of a couple for divorce on the grounds of adultery by the Corfu Primary Ecclesiastical Court.
