The thematic of memory in M. Ganas' poetic work
Summary:
The demonstration of the leading role of memory in Michalis Ganas’ poetic work defines the purpose of the present work. Looking at capable material, it is clear that memory transcends the poetic production of this author in two ways: both through his personal experiences and through his earlier - older or more recent - poetic tradition. This is true at the macroscopic level of the more general notions of homeland and social developments, but also at the more specific level of the personal experiences of the poetic subject, and in particular those of the concepts of Love and Death.
Concerning M. Ganas’ dialogue with his companions, efforts are made to find common ground with the anonymous poet of folk song and with authors such as D. Solomos, G. Seferis, M. Sachtouris and K.G Karyotakis. The concept of intertextuality (J. Kristeva) is exploited, while demonstrating the function of the mediating role of memory through dialogic words (M. Bakhtin), where practicable.
In M. Ganas’ poetic work the boundaries of the real with the imaginary are precarious and memory plays its part in this ambiguity. The speaker, trapped in yesterday and unable to find a realistic way out, creates by catching the thread of memory an ideal, fantastical state, where living and dead harmoniously coexist in a landscape reminiscent of the poet's hometown, simple, non-existent and ideal (eutopia).
