The anastassima Eothina doxastika of Leo VI the Wise. Philological study
Summary:
The eleven anastassima Eothina doxastika constitute irrefutable proof of the high poetic value of the hymnographic production provided by Leo VI the Wise, which has previously been underestimated by the research literature. In the present study ̶ after the introductory information about the tumultuous life and the multitude of works of the second emperor of the Macedonian dynasty ̶ the aforementioned hymns are examined for the first time in philological depth. Initially, emphasis is placed on their etymology, and their timeless presence in the Cult of the orthodox Church is examined; furthermore, the authorship of both them and the music that accompanies them, as well as the chronology of their composition and the incentives of their creator are presented. Subsequently, a presentation of the texts themselves is provided. They are translated into modern Greek, are thoroughly and extensively commented upon, and their Sources and Testimonies are given in detail. In conclusion, Leo’s literary talent and erudition on the one hand, and the great impact of his literary work on subsequent generations on the other, are established through the present study.
