Mental health and life events in children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Summary:
Introduction: Children who are diagnosed with chronic diseases, may be vulnerable
to developing emotional problems, conduct problems or problems in peer relationships.
Purpose: The present study investigated whether children and adolescents who suffer
from juvenile idiopathic arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus, have more
emotional difficulties, conduct problems or problems in peer relationships compared to
their healthy peers. It was also investigated whether the flares of the above diseases
were correlated with stressful life events. Method: The sample consisted of 45 children
and adolescents (14 boys and 31 girls) with an average age of 12,4 years old, who were
hospitalized at “Agia Sofia” pediatric hospital with the diagnosis of juvenile arthritis or
systemic lupus and their parents (N=45). The control group consisted of 71 healthy
children and adolescents (29 boys and 42 girls) with an average age of 13,1 years old
and their parents (Ν=67). The questionnaires used in this study were the “Strengths
and Difficulties” Questionnaire and the Life Events Scale, as well as two forms, which
included demographic information and information about systemic lupus and juvenile
arthritis for each participant. Results: According to their parents, children who suffer
from systemic lupus or juvenile arthritis, had more overall difficulties compared to their
healthy peers (p=0,001). Children’s self-reports showed that those who suffer from the
above diseases had more emotional problems than their healthy peers (p<0,01). Finally,
children whose disease was in a period of flare had experienced more stressful life
events the last 12 months compared to those whose disease was in a state of recession
(p<0,01).
