The emergence of the metalinguistic awareness of 6th grade learners of the Hellenic state primary school. An experiment in FFL class using the Pluralistic Approaches.
Summary:
Although European educational guidelines are targeted at the didactics of plurilingualism, the Greek education system does not seem to follow these guidelines in a way that favors the development of a plurilingual repertoire. In order to propose ways to suitably implement the Pluralistic Approaches (PA) during FFL class into the syllabi of the Hellenic Greek primary school’s last two class levels of the Hellenic Greek primary school, we studied existing literature to find a key element on which we could base this adaptation. At the end of this study, we found that metalinguistic awareness in the psycholinguistic sense of the term can be a safe reference point for the teachers who wish to guide their practices so as to promote the plurilingualism of their learners. This study utilised three research tools, a questionnaire for 158 teachers, a quasi-experimentation applied in ten different classes of the 6th primary class, and a closed interview with eight teachers who testified this quasi-experimentation. Based on this research, we have tried to examine the current situation of the Greek terrain in relation to the space given to the emergence of metalinguistic awareness, and consider at what level this field is ready to welcome approaches such as PA requiring systematic reflection on languages and language.
