The incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneymonia in intensive care unit patients
Summary:
Overview: Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is the most common infection among patients under mechanical ventilation in Intensive Care Units ( ICUs). It prolongs ICU stay and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality and cost.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was the investigation of VAP incidence in the ICU through a comprehensive review of sources through valid data bases.
Results: There are no universally accepted diagnostic criteria, but the need for a prompt diagnosis and timely therapeutic treatment is recognized. The incidence of VAP presents many fluctuations among the various ICUs due to the use of different diagnostic criteria, but in general it is estimated to affect 7-28% of the patients under mechanical ventilation. There is difficulty in estimating the crude mortality attributed to VAP, but it is estimated to average between 20 and 70%. The crude mortality of VAP among patients under mechanical ventilation is estimated to be 6-20 times higher than the non-intubated patients. Agreement was found about the risk factors, the responsible pathogens and the need to implement strategies for the prevention and management of VAP, in order to reduce its incidence.
