Histopathology characteristics of adenomyosis and endometriosis in obstetrical and gynecological specimens; Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of General Hospital of Chania, General Hospital of Rethymnon, General Hospital of Heraklion "Venizeleio & Pananio" 1999-2018.
Summary:
Endometriosis and adenomyosis are frequent gynecological conditions, which have great impact on women’s quality of life. Although it has been a good many years since their first description, there are still important issues concerning these medical disorders that remain unsolved.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study that comprised histological examinations of surgical specimens with the diagnosis of endometriosis or/ and adenomyosis. These came from obstetrical and gynecological surgery conducted at Herakleion General Hospital Venizeleio - Pananeio, Rethymnon General Hospital and Chania General Hospital during 1999-2018. We collected 1020 histopathological exams; 699 with adenomyosis, 259 with endometriosis and 62 comprised lesions both endometriotic and adenomyotic.
The results of our sample study appear to be in agreement with the literature references. Adenomyosis is rarely present on its own, and is often accompanied by leiomyomas, endometrial polyps and endometriotic foci. On the other hand, ovarian endometriosis is the most common form of endometriosis and coexistence with leiomyomas, serous cystadenomas and parasalpingeal cysts is common.
