Improving functionality of stroke patients by applying mirror therapy to the semi-occluded upper extremity
Summary:
The role of health professionals involved in the recovery of patients who suffered a stroke is important. Stroke is one of the most important causes of various long-term motor problems. Physicians, Rehabilitation Nurses, Physiotherapists, Sport teachers - gymnasts (specialised in rehabilitation), Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Dietitians, Psychologists and Social Workers are involved in the rehabilitation of their patients, trying to bring them back to their physical condition before the stroke, if possible, or to bring them back to a condition close to their former one, as far as possible.
One of the tools used, is Mirror Therapy. In our research, we wanted to see how much it could affect the improvement of patients who would do Mirror Therapy in conjunction with a classical recovery program .
Our study involved 22 patients who were divided into two random groups of 11 subjects.
Group A of 11 followed a classical recovery program (1 hour / 5 times a week for 6 weeks) and group B of 11 followed a classical recovery program (1 hour / 5 times a week for 6 weeks) and mirror therapy (1 hour). / 5 times a week for 6 weeks.
We measured the 10 Barthel scale indicators at the beginning and at the end of the program to see if there are any differences and realize their full extent.
