The Vendetta as a way of resolving disputes. Comparative overview of Cretan and Albanian societies.
Summary:
The present study treats the vendetta as an anthropological and sociological phenomenon. It examines the relationship between unwritten and transposed law, and looks for the factors that give rise to revenge as a way of administering justice. At the same time, the study of the vendetta in Crete and Albania highlights the importance of the family and its role (in the vendetta), as well as the way blood ties influence and determine revenge. A very important element that also emerges, is the reconciliation of the two opposing families through the intervention of a third party, the peacekeeper, and generally the way society treats the vendetta involved. Finally, the relationship between the rule of law and the unwritten law of revenge is sought. The study concludes with the interview that was kindly given to us by the peacemaker and folklorist Mr. Kanakis Geronimakis, who answered the questions we asked him about the vendetta.
