The relative creditworthiness of development and growth theory
Summary:
This doctoral thesis focuses on the deeper causes of economic development
and growth in a multidimensional world. Recognizing institutional and
cultural background as two of the deeper causes of economic development
and growth, the thesis demonstrates the need for theoretical and empirical
documentation on their role. At the same time, the question of their coevolution arises (both theoretically and empirically), a question necessary for
the effectiveness of the economic policy. The necessity of searching for
deeper causes of economic development and growth is illustrated by the
complexity of the globalized world, the strengthening of individuals'
intellectual capacity, and the need for a deep understanding of economic and
social phenomena, particularly in the wake of the recent global financial
crisis. At the same time, those deeper sources are linked to the economic
policy since their role is critical for the effectiveness of policies that are
implemented in the same way in all economies (one-size-fits-all policies).
Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to highlight the deeper causes for
economic development and growth (Chapters 2, 3, and 4), as
multidimensional reality dictates, under a common theoretical architecture
(Chapter 1). This theoretical architecture is consistent with evolutionary
economic thinking and is based on a general and integrated approach for the
development and growth of economies as well as an integrated methodology
(methodological pluralism). In this context, the deeper causes are getting
into the thinking of economic science through the theoretical architecture of
meso- and meta- economics. Under this theoretical architecture, three
essays that complete the thesis are developed (Chapters 2, 3, and 4). These
essays have a twofold contribution since each one contributes to the
development of the theoretical architecture analyzed, while -at the same
time- each essay contributes to the relevant literature as a stand-alone text.
The integrated concept of economic development and growth is directly
linked to the integrated concept of the content of human action. For
economists, approaching a multidimensional reality as expressed by the
action of Homo Holisticus is one of the challenges faced. This definition,
which is consistent with an evolutionary view of economics, draws more
clearly into the actual status of the individual as it encompasses his
biological, economic, and social (political) background. This is a combination
of Homo Sapiens (based on genetic variation of characteristics and
Darwinian principles of evolution), Homo Economicus (an intelligent but
one-dimensional individual who is based on his liberation and in achieving
personal welfare) and Homo Socialis (who integrates the cultural and
institutional dimension of an individual as part of the society to which he
belongs expressing elements of altruism and cooperation). This is the "heart"
and the general perspective of this doctoral thesis.
