The prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (mri) in preoperative staging of rectal cancer: a single center experience
Summary:
The aim of the current study is to determine the sensitivity and the specificity of preoperative staging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with rectal cancer in Greece and to highlight the importance of this information in the assessment of these patients preoperatively. One hundred twenty-five consecutive patients (125) with rectal cancer, who were operated in the A’ Propaedutic Surgical Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during the period from October of 2016 to October of 2019, were assessed preoperatively with magnetic resonance imaging for tumour (T) and nodal (N) staging. Then the histopathological findings of those patients were checked to determine whether there was a concordance or not with the preoperative findings. A search was also made in medical e-libraries (Pubmed, Scopus) using key words to find similar studies and compare our results. There was a large number of studies, but it seems that our number of patients is on of the largest from one clinic that was ever evaluated and published and definitely the largest in Greece. The conclusion of our study is that the quality of the information that we take from preoperative staging with magnetic resonance imaging in patients with rectal cancer, is lower in Greece compared with the results from the biggest studies that have already been published.
