Predictors of stress and coping strategies in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder
Summary:
Parenting a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is challenging and can result in elevated levels of parenting stress. The aim of the present study was to identify the main factor that trigger stress in parents of children with ASD and to reveal the most frequently used coping strategy. Additionally, the influence of coping strategies and demographic variables on parenting stress was investigated. The sample consisted of 191 parents of children with ASD, who completed an internet survey reporting on their experience of stress and the use of coping strategies. The questionnaires included were the Parenting Stress Index, Short Form (PSI-SF) (Abidin, 1995) and the Brief Cope (Carver, 1997). Findings indicated that parenting distress was the most significant predictor of stress and engagement was the most frequently used coping strategy, which was not significantly correlated with the total level of stress. Results also revealed a significant negative relationship between cognitive reframing and stress. Finally, study findings are discussed in light of prior research and study limitations and clinical implications are highlighted.
