Aspects of diversity in children's literature

Diversity management remains an ongoing issue in the educational field, as today’s classrooms are comprised of an extremely varied student population, in terms of origin, religion, native language, mental capabilities, appearance and other factors. This heterogeneity that has become an integral part of classrooms dynamics, should be used in a creative way by the teachers of contemporary inclusive schools, so that tolerance towards diversity is enhanced and any signs of racism in tomorrow’s citizens are eliminated. The main purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which literature can be of use towards that direction. During the reading process, the young reader learns how to co-exist, mentally travelling to other people’s lands, learning about their culture and thus developing open-mindedness and critical thinking. In addition, meeting fictional characters encourages empathy, while multicultural storylines, along with the use of polyphonic narrative voice, can undermine the development of stereotypes. In the books analyzed for this study, the protagonists stand out in one way or another and differentiate themselves from the dominant social groups. These books can be used in the classroom context, with the purpose of enhancing diversity and the benefits that come from co-existing with the Other.
