Quality of life of parents with children with autism spectrum disorder and mental disability
Summary:
The purpose of this research was to specify the quality of life of parents whose children have either autistic spectrum disorder or mental disability. Specifically, the research questions were: (a) how much does the quality of life of parents with children with autism spectrum disorder and cognitive disabilities vary; (b) whether parents of children with autism and mental disability experience depression and (c) how the level of depression the quality of life of parents of autistic and mentally disabled children vary according to their demographic characteristics. Two scales were used for this purpose. The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (Argyle, Martin, & Crossland, 1989) was used to measure quality of life, and the Beck's Depression Inventory II (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) was used to measure depression. The sample consisted of 155 parents of children with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disability. The research has shown that parents, regardless of their child's disorder, have no symptoms of depression. In addition, depression levels and quality of life are not affected by the age and gender of the parents, which is inconsistent with previous research. On the contrary, the level of depression and thus the quality of life are affected by the marital status of individuals. Finally, the quality of life is influenced by the educational level, occupational status, income and age of the child.
