Roma and Domestic Violence. The case of Sofo Camp in Aspropyrgos, Attica, Greece
Summary:
The purpose of the present study was the qualitative approach and mapping of the problem of domestic violence in a sample of abused Roma women in Sofo camp, in Aspropyrgos, Attica. More specifically, the physical, psychological and social implications of violence, as manifested in a closed society such as the Roma, have been studied. The individual objectives of the work were: to raise awareness and highlight the dimensions of the problem in this population, based on the consequences of the exercise of physical and mental violence on the family. Also, the role of the cultural factor in shaping the dynamic reproduction of domestic violence ultimately leads to the prevention of the social integration of the particular minority group.
This study, as a qualitative survey, used as a methodological tool for data collection the semi-structured interview of eight Romani women living permanently in the Sofo camp in Aspropyrgos for the depiction of perceptions, attitudes and personal experiences on the issue of domestic violence. The case developed in this study is that the victims of violence within the Roma community believe that the use of violence within their family context as something which is not a particular abusive behavior with criminal consequences but is the product of their culture which promotes man's dynamism over the rest of the family. Also, the results of this survey showed the highest incidence of violence in this group, with a clear reason for the lack of basic education, educational, economic and social level.
