Planning and delineation of post-excavation refuge sites in the Municipality of Katerini
Summary:
Katerini Municipality is a municipality where the risk of seismicity is real as there are 5 active bugs or active fault systems within and near the municipality boundaries. The need to organize and design strategic earthquake contingency plans is a given.
The purpose of this work is to describe the appropriate open spaces in the city for the purpose of safe evacuation of the population, which was manifested as a first reaction to an earthquake and generally to minimize loss of life and injuries.
Based on the spatial distribution of the central earthquakes and their corresponding seismic sizes, it was found that Northern Greece has high seismicity, which is mainly observed along major fault zones, such as the Servo-Macedonian zone and the North Aegean.
The result of this tectonic regime is that the region's seismic hazard ranges from V to VIII.
Concerning the shelters, an on-site identification study was carried out to identify the most suitable free spaces for use as a shelter and proposed the creation of 37 shelters for the population of the city of Katerini and one part shelter in the case of the city in 5 different Urban Units.
