A case study of the song "Three ships sail" (Tria karavia pane) in the region of Zagori
Summary:
This essay is a case study of the song “Three ships sail” (“Τρία καράβια πάνε”) from Eastern Thrace through which I will try to interpret the musical style of Zagori region from the prefecture of Ioannina.
Reviewing the relevant bibliography, I examined the rise of the Zagorian society during the past centuries and analyzed its people’s reception of foreign elements regarding their music.
I chose five versions of the song and I interviewed the protagonists of each version. I also interviewed a person with in depth knowledge of the Zagorian musical idiosyncrasy. Through the examination of each version and the information taken by the interviews, I tried to answer on how and why this song was incorporated into the region’s musical repertoire.
The information taken from the interviews were firstly analyzed separately and then were cross-examined with the rest in order to create an information net that helped to make conclusions regarding each version and the musical style of the region.
In this case, as in other cases, the Zagorians’ willingness to try on new musical styles and to even include them to their repertoire was verified.
Something that was not answered is the degree of the remaining automation of the Zagorian society. Perhaps is the need of the present Zagorians to remember, from the one hand, their glorious past and from the other, to recognize their characteristics in order to preserve their identity in a time when collegiality and local societies are being tested.
