Summary:
Politeness is a major and vital chapter in both teaching a language and Pragmatics and it is associated with various speech acts. Politeness in requests, especially in those that occur in service encounters, is expressed in various ways by greek native speakers, depending on factors that characterize and influence the context. Therefore, the present paper deals with these ways of acting politeness in restaurant service encounters. The extracted results are based on factors such as social distance, power and age and they contribute to formulating valuable suggestions about teaching Greek as a first or a second/ foreign language.
