Original Title:
Η μουσική ως εργαλείο προπαγάνδας κατά την πρώτη εικοσαετία της δικτατορίας του Φράνκο
Translated title:
Music as a tool of propaganda during the first twenty years of Franco's dictatorship
Summary:
The paper explores the ways in which the francoist regime used music as a tool of propaganda during the first twenty years of its rule. It also introduces to the censorship mechanisms of music activity during the abovementioned period and the role of the media in shaping the musical identity of the nation. Based on the values of nationalism, Catholicism and tradition, the regime carries out a major campaign to constitute and to promote the Spanish music tradition, while at the same time the institutions of the regime, such as the Phalanx Party's Female Section will make a decisive contribution to this purpose. The propagandistic use of music is finally confirmed by the ways in which music education institutions are staffed and by the content of music teaching itself.
