Thyroid disease during pregnancy
Summary:
In the general part of this diploma thesis a description of the thyroid gland anatomy
and physiology as well as the biosynthesis, transport and action of the thyroid hormones T3
and T4 were made. Physiological changes of the thyroid gland during pregnancy were then
presented.
A detailed description of thyroid diseases in pregnancy is given in the specific part of
the thesis. The thyroid function of the pregnant women undergoes many physiological
changes to cope with the fetal feeding needs. However, the development of thyroid gland
disorders is also common. Early identification and treatment of thyroid function disorders is
particularly important since it involves increased morbidity for the mother and the fetus. In
particular during the first trimester of pregnancy that begins to form the thyroid gland of the
fetus, it is very important that mother's thyroid hormones penetrate the placenta and reach the
fetus. Thus thyroid diseases in pregnancy, diagnosis, effects on the fetus and mother and their
proposed treatment were analyzed.
It is well known that the lack of thyroid hormones and iodine during
pregnancy affects the development of the fetus and leads to problems that have impact on
neuropsychotic and mental development. It is necessary to thyroid function check up
regularly in pregnancy in order to deal promptly with any problems that may arise. When
thyroid disease is already diagnosed before pregnancy the therapy should be reassessed since
it is likely that the dosage of drugs will increase.
