Effect of Earth's magnetic field on human activities
Summary:
The only property of the earth's magnetic field, that we have known and used for hundreds of years, was its’ use as a compass. Since then however, we have discovered much more vital services that it has offered, especially as far as the study of space weather is concerned. The Earth is constantly "bombarded" with highly charged cosmic particles which reach Earth via the solar wind and manage to enter the atmosphere and reach the ground. This Postgraduate Thesis aims to address the impact of the Earth's magnetic field on human activities, technologically, biologically and environmentally wise, especially during periods with high levels of cosmic radiation. A typical example of this, is the largest recorded magnetic storm in history, which took place in November 2003.
