Identification of Hazards for Power Networks and Power Supply to Critical Infrastructures
Summary:
The purpose of the thesis is to identify the risks and threats for power networks, such as climate change, extreme weather events and cyber attacks, as well as for the electric power provision to critical infrastructures including hospitals, data centers, nuclear power plants, etc.
Energy security is a cornerstone of modern industrialized societies and economies since they could not operate without uninterrupted power supply. As regional economies grow up more interconnected, they become increasingly vulnerable to regional and sub-regional blackouts with severe consequences for the economy and the environment, since telecommunication, transport and heating systems can be threatened. For this reason, the protection of electricity networks against natural disasters is considered as particularly important.
In terms of this diploma thesis, best practices will be sought that should be applied by all the involved stakeholders (responsible ministries, national regulatory authorities, NGOs, etc.) in effective risk mitigation and risk management strategies before and after the national and regional electricity networks are affected by natural disasters.
