Narratives and experiences of unaccompanied minors who live in Athens
Summary:
The current paper is part of a broader research program that aims to explore the experiences of unaccompanied minors who live in Athens. A main goal is to elicit personal narrations and meanings, with emphasis on resilience. The role of culture was taken into consideration in the identity formation of participants. Qualitative research approach was chosen to be the most appropriate for this subject. In particular, this paper applied photovoice methodology that allows participants to take photographs and reflect on them. In addition, focus groups and an individual qualitative interview were also used. All participants live in a shelter for unaccompanied minorities in Athens. Data analysis used thematic analysis method. Results showed that participants experience a complex everyday life. Through their narrations and the photographs they took, they refer to experiences from daily life in Greece. Particularly, they talk about the importance of ancient places and central locations of Athens, friends and nature. The need for connections with culture is also present. Furthermore, participants talk about some difficulties and their personal interests. Future plans and dreams are also being discussed. In conclusion, research on unaccompanied narrations and experiences can be enriched. Finally, state should make decisions and changes by taking into consideration the best interest of unaccompanied minors.
