Prevention of unintentionally childhood Injuries under the age of 5 years old at home, from health professionals - A cross-sectional study
Summary:
Unintentionally childhood injuries are a significant cause of death for children under the age of 5 years old across Europe. It is an important cause of disability and other injuries. Activities for injury prevention through health care services can be a noteworthy intervention concerning unintentionally childhood injuries in children under the age of 5 years old.

This cross-sectional study was carried out through a clearly defined questionnaire, which was developed following a relevant literature review. In the survey research took part 100 health professionals who are working with families with little children, the majority of them was womens and health visitors. Apart from the current practices and the attitudes towards their role for the prevention of childhood injuries, were red up, also, the barriers which they face in their daily practice.

The 50 percent of the participants believes that the undergraduated education they had on their studies regarding to unintentionally childhood injuries is satisfying. Only the 1/3 of the health care professionals mentioned that they have received through their workplace further education regarding unintentionally childhood injuries at home and their prevention. Subsequently, only the 44 percent of the participants are dealing with the education updating of the parents through their workplace, however, the 82 percent of them agrees that the majority of childhood injuries at home can be prevented and that the health services, as well as, health care professionals could be more effective in preventing childhood injuries (83%). With regard to parent education/counseling, the majority of the participants think that the lack of continuity in health care is a barrier in order to develop a trustworthy relationship between the health care professional and the parent, the insufficient time through the clinical visit, the lack of handout materials (eg leaflets), as well as, the lack of an interdisciplinary workplace team in order to cross-refer at information sessions. Lastly, only the 1/5 from the health care professionals mentioned that they do not feel enough trained and is turned to be a major barrier for them.

Barriers to practice for health care professionals need to be taken into account. No matter how knowledgeable nor how positive their attitudes to childhood injury prevention are, if barriers to practice are not addressed, we will move no closer to reducing the burden of injuries in childhood. Those health care professionals, who are positive about their role, may be best suited to continue to raise the issue campaigning for legislative and engineering changes, which can reduce childhood injuries.
