Mass gathering and related emergency medical conditions: Prevention, diagnosis and effective management
Summary:
Mass gatherings are associated with an increased incidence of accidents and diseases compared to the general population. They usually involve large sports or music events or are associated with crowded religious gatherings. The present retrospective study describes the most common factors that increase morbidity and lead participants to seek medical care. Weather conditions, type of event, alcohol and drug consumption, as well as crowd size and event planning are the predominant variables that influenced morbidity rates, causing accidents, falls, stampedes, transmission of infectious diseases, heat stroke and intoxication. Furthermore, appropriate preventive and effective measures are recorded in line with international guidelines, focusing on the organization of field care units and their interconnection with the local network of hospitals and ambulances.
