Brain Drain and the quality of sibling relationships
Summary:
The aim of this research was to study the brain drain phenomenon and its effect on sibling relationships. Another aim was to explore the qualitative characteristics of sibling relationships considering the period before emigration and after, as well. It is a qualitative research, which was conducted in order to study the quality of sibling relationship and the possible changes after emigration. Semi- structured interviews were a necessary tool to collect the data. A cyber application – Skype- was used for interviewing, since the participants are living abroad. As far as the sample is concerned, in the research participated 13 siblings, 6 men and 7 women, who emigrated with the view of continuing their studies and finding a job. The criteria for participating in the study were that the participants should have lived abroad at least for the last 2 years and their brothers/sisters live in Greece. Another criterion was that the sample should not have experienced loss because of divorce or death. In addition, for the purposes of this research the method of Thematic Analysis was chosen as the best to analyze the data. The findings of the research emerged that sibling relationships are most likely to be dependent on the basic nature and the quality of the relationship rather than the decision of emigration. Moreover, the decision of emigration was a personal choice of the participants without the involvement of siblings. Regarding the quality of the relationship it seems that childhood and adolescence play an important role, but during adulthood siblings become closer and their relationships warmer. Another finding was that the distance between them because of emigration improves their relationships, since conflicts are reduced and their will to communicate is stronger. Undoubtedly, feelings of loss due to emigration were emerged, but siblings are trying to keep in touch. Finally, gender, birth order and age spacing, despite the fact that they bond siblings, it appears that they do not affect significantly sibling relationships, as personality traits and emotional proximity, do.
