Development of Software Application to Enhance Teaching of Jazz Improvisation
Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is the documentation and implementation of a software application to enhance the teaching of jazz improvisation. To this end, extensive bibliographic research was conducted in order to investigate a) the impact of introducing technology in education, b) the impact of introducing technology in music education, and c) the impact of introducing technology in learning jazz improvisation. Research showed that technology can positively influence the teaching of jazz improvisation; additionally, it can support the traditional methods and practices of music education. At the same time however, a clear lack of effective technological tools for cultivating jazz improvisational skills was revealed. Extensive research on jazz improvisational pedagogy followed and, based on all of the above, a decision was made to develop an application that automatically generates music phrases – melodic lines for the implementation of a V7-I cadence. Each phrase draws its material from the so-called “bebop” scales, which have been historically widely used by jazz improvisers and are largely “responsible” for the “sound” of improvisational jazz that we are all fairly accustomed to. When incorporated into the practice routine of a musician or a student, these lines can help them not only to create their own jazz vocabulary, but also to practice their acoustic skills, improve their articulation, increase their knowledge of harmony and develop their technique. For the implementation of the application, Max 8.0.2 was used; an advanced music programming environment which, via MaxScore, enables us to view the results in the form of standard western music notation. Finally, in this thesis, two jazz “standards” were selected and are analyzed, providing a suitable ground for the application of the results of our program, while an original arrangement for each of them is also presented.
