Argumentative Discourse in Greek and Mathematics in the Elemantary School
Summary:
Argumentative discourse is amongst the main aims of the Greek Educational System,
transcending various courses. In this dissertation, we investigate the opportunities
provided to the students of the Fifth Grade of the Elementary School (11 years old) for
being engaged in argumentative discourse in the textbooks of the courses of
Mathematics and Greek. For Mathematics, in order to consider the recent change in
the textbooks, both the previous and the current editions of the textbooks were
included in our investigation. The aim of the study was to identify convergences and
divergences in the ways the institutional discourse about argumentative discourse is
presented to the students. The results of the conducted content analyses revealed that the mathematics school textbooks offer opportunities for the students’ being engaged in proof and proving (viewed as argument) in ways that align with those in Greek, whilst this seems to be qualitatively and considerably improved in the new textbooks.
