The influence of Social Network Sites on Self-perception of Appearance through the activation of Appearance-based Rejection Sensitivity and the examination of Self-Compassion as a protective factor to this influence.
Summary:
The examination of the effect of Social Networking Sites (SNS) on Body Image is an emerging field in research. In the absence of relevant research for the Greek population, the present study examined primarily whether SNS have an effect on Body Image of young adults in this cultural context. However, since Body Image is influenced by a web of factors, the participation of the biological sex, Appearance based Rejection Sensitivity (A-RS), Schematic Investment in Appearance (SI-A) and Self-Compassion (S-C) were also examined as possible influencing factors of the relationship of SNS with Body Image. A-RS allows the interpretation and apprehension of the relationship between face-to-face interpersonal interaction and Body Image Satisfaction. A-RS was initially examined as to whether it can be activated in digital environments and secondly in terms of its ability to mediate the relationship of SNS with Body Image. At the same time, S-C was examined in terms of its ability to act protectively against the negative effects of SNS and A-RS, on Body Image.Participants consisted of 370 students of higher education institutions in Greece, aged 18 to 25 years. Statistical analysis suggested that A-RS and S-C are sufficient predictive factors of Body Image Satisfaction. Respectively, statistical analysis through PROCESS, indicated that A-RS mediated the effect of moderate use of Facebook on Body Image satisfaction, while S-C moderated the association between Facebook and A-RS, indicating that S-C can act as a protective factor against the reinforcing effect of Facebook on A-RS. Additionally, S-C mediated the relationship between A-RS and Body Image Satisfaction. Regression Analysis indicated that SI-A can predict part of Body Image Satisfaction for Instagram users, but not for Facebook users, and SI-A can also predict part of time spent on SNS. However, the probable mediating role of SI-A in the relationship between SNS and Body Image Satisfaction was not able to be confirmed. The present study showcases methodological issues that may arise while researching the use of SNS through self-reports, while at the same time, it introduces A-RS as a new factor in the research of SNSs effect on Body Image. Additionally, it highlights the capability of S-C to inhibit the negative effects of SNS on Body Image for people characterized with A-RS, indicating thus, a new direction for both research and therapeutic approach and prevention.
