«The refugee context through professional's narratives: their personal experiences»

The aim of this research is to study the experiences of the professionals who work with refugees and asylum seekers. The study through the thematic analysis is trying to describe the context of the interventions, the difficulties that the professionals are facing, the impact on them and the coping mechanism they are adopting. Semi structure interviews with twelve professionals (psychologist, social worker, and sociologist) were conducted for data collection, in person or through Skype application. The professionals were working in registration and identification centers, open accommodation facilities, shelter for unaccompanied children or vulnerable families, accommodation programs and daily centers. The research findings showed that the participants are trying to keep a stable context for their intervention while it was emerged the complex and important role of the interpreter in this interventions. The difficulties faced are related either with the workplace, the profile of the population, or the collaboration with others. Furthermore the integration of population is an important matter for the professionals, since there is a high need to work with the asylum seekers and refugees towards interpretation, however there is lack of targeted intervention. The professionals are experiencing positive impact, on personal and professional level, as long as negative impact mainly focused on their psychological wellbeing. Finally they make use of personal coping strategies and also seek for support in their workplace.
