Osteopathy in the treatment of diseases of the lower respiratory tract.

The present study, using various research papers concerning the effect of Osteopathic Manual Techniques on patients with respiratory diseases, aims to investigate the efficacy of osteopathic intervention on speeding recovery, improving respiratory parameters and limiting antibiotic intake to these patients. By studying the available articles, it became clear that the authors associate respiratory diseases with the function of the Lymphatic System, the system of the body that is inextricably linked to the defense mechanism of the organism. The proper circulation of both the blood and the lymph requires a proper functioning of all the muscles and joints of the body, but mainly that of the thorax and the diaphragm, which, acting as pumps, play a great role in the propulsion of blood and lymph to the heart. In addition, the application of various techniques on the thoracic cage helps to mechanically drain the secretions of the bronchial tree, thereby reducing infections and improving the respiratory parameters. Consequently, osteopathic techniques focus on : a) the lymphatic system, aiming at its mobilization, thereby stimulating the body’s defense, and b) the musculoskeletal system of the thoracic cage, aiming at improving its mobility, thus also improving the function of the respiratory system which it encompasses.
