The Eyes of the City A complete survey on Street Art - the case of Athens
Summary:
The first section of this essay attempts to examine the Street Art phenomenon in its entirety. Seeking to surpass numerous constraints caused by non-interdisciplinary critical approaches published thus far, the paper investigates the subject matter from various aspects. By tracing a brief history of Street Art and its foundations through time, as well as exploring its dialectic connection to aesthetic, social, political and economic aspects, the essay attempts to fully place Street Art in the general continuum of Art History and clarify its influence in the contemporary visual culture, along with its organic connection to the city and the urban process.

The second section of the paper implements the corpus of the theoretical directions studied earlier in the case of Athens. It focuses primarily on the time of crisis, during which street art exploded, shaped and acquired specific local identity elements, resulting in its large-scale globalization. By critically examining a number of artists who represent this particular wave and by introducing the three-fold scope of “Love-Death-Self”, which penetrates art through time and which in this case is affiliated with the “circle of life” of the city itself, the essay explores the way street art has influenced the cultural identity of Athens altogether.
