The Therapeutic Alliance in group therapy and in individual psychotherapy of a systemic-dialectical approach. Bilateral connection relationships aimed at therapeutic change. Evaluation and comparison of 8 therapeutic frameworks
Summary:
The therapeutic relationship, that develops between the therapist and the client during psychotherapy or counseling is, by all means, the most important factor in the outcome of the therapeutic intervention. In the context of systemic psychotherapy, the investigation of the characteristics and peculiarities of the therapeutic relationship is still incomplete. The present study, carried out in the framework of the post-graduate program of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School («Mental Health Promotion – Prevention of Psychiatric Disorders»), focused on the development of the therapeutic bond in group and individual systemic-dialectical psychotherapy and addressed specific factors affecting therapy, as well as differences between group and individual psychotherapy.
The study was conducted using the Greek adaptation of the Working Alliance Inventory in a sample of 11 systemic psychotherapists and 118 clients (86 in group and 32 in individual psychotherapy). The results showed a clear development of therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client. Furthermore, the therapeutic bond showed to be closely related to the development of a sense of security and common goals, the confidence of the client in the therapist's abilities, the degree of agreement with the goals of the therapeutic process, and the client's commitment to the therapeutic process. Finally, no difference was observed between individual and group psychotherapy in the quality and development of the therapeutic relationship.
