Nursing staff’s awareness of processing personal data according to GDPR
Summary:
Introduction: The protection of personal data is perhaps the biggest issue in the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms. Since May 2018, all European Union (EU) member states are implementing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) concerning the development of a single legislative framework for processing personal data. The GDPR applies to all organizations, including health services.
Purpose: The recording of the nursing personnel knowledge in the management of patients' personal data, according to the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and the application of this Regulation to health services.
Method: It was a cross-sectional study conducted between May and June 2019. The sample consisted of 229 nurses working in health care providers and as the source of the sample were professional nurses’ pages on social media. A two-part questionnaire was developed by the same researcher for data collection. The first part of the questionnaire (9 questions) recorded the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants while the second part (31 questions) recorded data on the knowledge as well as the application of GDPR. The questionnaire was formatted electronically through Google Forms and it was emailed to the participants. The SPSS version 24 was used for data analysis and α = 0.05 was considered as the level of statistical significance.
Results: According to the results of the study, it was recorded that almost 1 in 2 nurses was not informed about GDPR in their workplace. It was also found that older participants, training nurses, public-sector participants, assistant nurses, and nurses with fewer years of experience were less aware of the regulation. In addition, no correlation was found between the information on the GDPR and the work department and Health Region.
Conclusion: The present study found that nursing staff were not fully informed about GDPR and its implementation. Factors found to be related to the degree of knowledge of the participants were age, private sector, education level, position of responsibility and years of experience.
