Ideology and Roman Literature: the example of Ilias Latina
Summary:
This dissertation examines Ilias Latina, a latin epitome in verse attributed to Baebius Italicus which is dated in the Neronian period. In particular the subject of the paper is the examination on the one hand of the mechanisms found in this epitome in favour of the Neronian ideology and on the other hand of the new Trojan friendly reading of the Iliad. Given the nature of the thesis methodology, a three-chapter division was deemed appropriate. The first chapter examines indicatively and not exhaustively important works of the Augustian and Neronian periods through which the close relationship between the works of Latin literature and ideology emerges; the findings of the first chapter are used as a solid background for the construction of the arguments of the second chapter, which does not only focus on those parts of Ilias Latina that include propaganda elements in favour of Nero but also on those that can be read as indirect criticism mainly for the artistic and not the political work of the emperor.Τhe third chapter focuses on the in favour of the Trojans reading of the Iliad through on the one hand the transformation of Homer’s pure philhellenic approach into a Trojan friendly one, and on the other hand on the romanization of several parts of it.
