Georg Lukács's Contribution to Musical Aesthetics
Summary:
The object of the study is Georg Lukács’s musico-aesthetic work and in particular the chapter on music from the book The Specificity of the Aesthetic (Die Eigenart des Ästhetischen, 1963). The purpose of the study is to determine Lukács’s contribution to musical aesthetics, namely to demonstrate how his answers expand, deepen and promote reflection on the nature of musical content (on the question of how music is related to objective reality). This is done via analyzing the text to its individual constituents with a view to reconstruct the main argument of the text, which, enriched now with both the results of the analysis as well as with comparative juxtapositions with other musico-aesthetic approaches by representatives of marxist, traditional and modern Aesthetics, will emerge in a clearer form and will indicate more accurately the decisive moments of the contribution sought. The final conclusion drawn through the examination of the individual aspects of this question is that Lukács’s theory of music, his answers to the question of musical content, pose challenges to both traditional as well as modern Aesthetics, promote the overall reflection on the subject and, as a result, cannot be overlooked in the current debates on Aesthetics.
