Prognostic factors for the outcome of asthmatic children receiving inhaled corticosteroids
Summary:
Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the outcome of the disease for children with asthma
who receive inhaled corticosteroids.
Methods: This is a retrospective study of the population of patients-children who live mainly
in the metropolitan area of Athens, with asthma, without other comorbidities, who were
examined at the Regular Outpatient Clinics of the Pediatric Pulmonary Clinic of the
University General Hospital Attikon. The study examined several factors including the age
of onset of asthmatic symptoms, the age of retreat, as well as factors that may contribute to
asthma such as cesarean birth, prematurity, parental smoking, aeroallergen factors and
family history of asthma. The study involved 361 children, 245 boys and 116 girls, for whom
treatment with inhaled corticosteroids began at the onset of asthma or later.
Results: For 81.4% of the sample, treatment is continued, while 18.6% have completed
treatment, with an average duration of treatment of 2.9 years. The analysis through the cox
proportional hazards model showed that the outcome of the children's progress and the
duration of treatment can be significantly predicted by a survival model, which indicates a
greater risk for those who have more long-term treatments.
Conclusions: Significant predictors of the model were parental smoking, which increases
the risk and oxygen intake at birth that reduces it. Factors related to the history of the
parents, the age of onset and the age of remission of asthmatic symptoms, gender,
caesarean birth, prematurity, sensitization to aeroallergens did not reveal to be significant.
