TERRORIST ATTACKS IN THE CONTEXT OF ASYMMETRICAL THREATS AGAINST THE EUROPEAN STATES
Summary:
In the context of an evolving, yet persistent, terrorist threat, the European Union is becoming more and more an important factor concerning the fight against terrorism. After the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 (9/11), EU Member States decided to examine thoroughly and strengthen their counter-terrorism cooperation, as it is demonstrated by the European Security Strategy.
The present dissertation is analyzing the phenomenon of terrorism in the frame of the asymmetric threat and the crisis management. After a first historical flashback of this phenomenon and a report of some basic definitions, the causes of its occurrence are being investigated. Then, the modes of manifestation regarding to terrorist attacks are reported according to the data so far and the examples of attacks.
Furthermore, it is quoting in detail the attempt of managing the terrorism in the context of crisis management and the European Security Strategy as well.
In conclusion, extensive reference is made to the economic (direct-indirect) and psychosocial consequences of terrorist attacks and terrorism in general.
